what happened on that day in History.

William H. Seward was the secretary of State under Aberham Lincoln. (the
stamp has "Jr."), He did have a grandson W. H. Seward Jr., Also found
a Colonel W. H. Seward, Jr.. He was killed July 4, 1864 at the battle of
Monocacy. Can't find anything about a Co.

The Battle of Peleliu in the Phillippines started on this date. The
Battle of Peleliu, like the bloody World War II island campaigns before it,
was a fight to capture an airstrip on a small coral island in the Western
Pacific. And, as with previous island battles, the Americans prevailed, but
at a higher cost than anticipated, against the determined resistance of the
Japanese forces. U.S. Casualties: 2,336 killed and 8,450 wounded. Empire
of Japan Casualties: 10,695 killed, 202 captured
